SPC vs WPC Flooring — Which Is Better for Humid Australian Climates?

Two products, almost identical appearance, completely different performance in Australian conditions. Here's what they actually mean and which one is right for your home.
What SPC and WPC Actually Mean
SPC (Stone Polymer Composite): Limestone powder mixed with PVC and stabilisers. No wood fibre. Completely inert to moisture. Dimensions do not change with humidity.
WPC (Wood Plastic Composite): Wood fibre mixed with PVC foam. Wood fibre is present. Softer and quieter underfoot than SPC. But wood fibre absorbs moisture — the central performance difference.
The Performance Difference That Matters
In sustained high humidity — Queensland and coastal NSW at 70–80% — SPC dimensions stay identical year-round. WPC's wood fibre component absorbs atmospheric moisture causing micro-gapping, slight softness and eventual edge lifting over years. Not as bad as laminate, but not as stable as SPC.
The Simple Decision Rule
In Queensland or coastal NSW: SPC only.
In wet areas (kitchen, bathroom, laundry): SPC only.
With pets: SPC with 0.5mm+ wear layer.
Investment property: SPC — more durable, less risk of early replacement.
Southern states in non-coastal location: Either works. WPC if warmth and sound are priorities.
Price Comparison
Entry WPC vinyl plank: $18–$28/m². Entry SPC hybrid: $27.99–$35/m². The overlap is significant. For coastal Australian applications, the small SPC premium is easily justified.
