Flooring After a Flood — What to Do and What to Replace in Queensland and NSW Homes

Whether from a major flood event like those that hit the Clarence Valley in recent years, or from a burst pipe — this guide tells you exactly what to do with your flooring, what can be saved and what must be replaced.


First 48 Hours — What to Do Immediately

  • Photograph everything before you move anything — you'll need documentation for insurance.

  • Remove water as quickly as possible — every hour increases damage.

  • Increase airflow and ventilation — reduce humidity in the space as fast as possible.

  • Do not immediately rip up flooring — wait until you've documented everything for insurance.


What Can Be Saved

  • Porcelain and ceramic tiles: Usually unaffected. Clean grout with disinfectant. Tiles survive most flood events.

  • SPC hybrid flooring (short exposure, under 24–48 hours): The core is waterproof. Planks may be undamaged. Assess the subfloor and replace the attached underlay.

  • Solid timber (short exposure, dried immediately): Sometimes saved with professional drying. Success rate depends on speed of response.


What Cannot Be Saved

  • Laminate: Any significant flood exposure renders it unrecoverable. The HDF core swells irreversibly. Must be replaced.

  • WPC vinyl plank (extended exposure): Short exposure with rapid drying may be okay. Extended submersion typically damages the core.

  • Carpet: Category 2 or 3 flood water renders carpet unsalvageable. Replace it.


The Grafton and Clarence Valley Specific Situation

Many Grafton homes have experienced flooding multiple times. The pattern: laminate replaced → home flooded again → laminate replaced again. This cycle is avoidable. Install SPC hybrid once and the flooring component of future flood recovery is dramatically less costly.


What to Replace With

For all flood-affected areas — Grafton, Clarence Valley, Lismore, Ipswich — replace with SPC hybrid flooring. The waterproof core handles short-term flood exposure without structural damage. It dries quickly. Future events will cost significantly less to recover from.
