Hybrid Flooring vs Vinyl Plank — What's Actually the Difference in Australia?

If you've been shopping for flooring, you've probably noticed that retailers use 'hybrid flooring' and 'vinyl plank' interchangeably. This article cuts through the terminology and tells you exactly what you're actually comparing.
The Terminology Problem
The Australian flooring market uses at least a dozen different names for overlapping product categories: hybrid flooring, SPC flooring, vinyl plank, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), rigid core vinyl, engineered vinyl plank (EVP), WPC flooring. The name tells you almost nothing. The specification tells you everything.
What Actually Matters — The Core
SPC Core (Stone Polymer Composite): Limestone powder mixed with PVC. No wood fibre. Completely waterproof — not water resistant, waterproof.
WPC Core (Wood Plastic Composite): Wood fibre mixed with PVC foam. Water resistant but NOT fully waterproof. Sustained moisture will eventually cause core degradation.
HDF Core (laminate): Pure wood fibre, compressed. Not waterproof at all.
So What Is 'Hybrid Flooring'?
In the Australian market, hybrid flooring almost always refers to a product with an SPC core, attached IXPE foam underlay, photographic timber or stone layer, clear wear layer (0.3–0.7mm), and click-lock installation system. It is a premium, fully waterproof click-lock floor.
What To Ask Before You Buy
Is the core SPC or WPC?
What is the wear layer thickness? (0.3mm minimum, 0.5mm for family homes)
Is underlay included or separate?
What does the warranty exclude?
The Bottom Line
Hybrid flooring and vinyl plank are not the same thing — but they can be, depending on the core. SPC core = fully waterproof = right for most Australian homes. WPC core = water resistant only = adequate for low-humidity, climate-controlled homes. Always ask for the core specification.
